Leafs GM John Ferguson and Quinn, the Toronto and Team Canada coach, are tight-lipped on the subject of free agents. This week, Ferguson is negotiating with Roberts, Nieuwendyk and Tie Domi, the latter keeping curiously close to Pittsburgh Penguins' owner Mario Lemieux these days.
Tie Domi a Penguin? would my favorite Maple Leaf... indeed my favorite hockey player, trade in the Blue and White for Black and Gold? Say it ain't so!
Well, the Leafs don't exactly need an enforcer. Their star player is Mats Sundin, a 6 foot 5, 230 pound center who can take care of himself. Tucker and McCabe are no strangers to the penalty box, and if the Leafs hang onto oh-so-precious Wade "Skillz" Belak, do they really need Domi's shenanigans?
Tie may be a fan favorite in TO, but with salary cap troubles and, quite frankly, all the penalty trouble they got into last season... it would not surprise me or even hurt me if Tie went to a team where he is needed, and where he will be used to his full potential.
Over in Three Rivers territory, someone will have to stick up for Crosby and the kids. Pens fans, rest assured that if anyone so much as looks at Crosby the wrong way, Domi would make him answer for it. Add to that his charisma, his energy, his leadership in the locker room, and the sheer fan draw that he brings, Tie in Steel City might make for a very happy union... and twice as many opportunities for another "Philadelphia Incident" (March 29, 2001
